A man who “wanted to stay longer” at Piedmont Medical Center was arrested after pulling a fire alarm at the hospital out of frustration for being discharged, according to Rock Hill Police.

Officers responded to a call about a disorderly patient just after midnight. As they entered the building they saw the fire alarm had been set off, according to a police report. Police spoke with James Elmer Ray, 33, who said “he wanted to stay longer,” a police report states.

“The staff denied his request and discharged him,” the report states. “Ray became upset and ran from security, pulling the fire alarm out of frustration.”

Ray was “given the opportunity” to leave the hospital while being put on trespass notice, police said. He left the property, and was seen hiding near the hospital’s loading docks about 15 minutes later.

Ray was charged with causing a false fire alarm and trespassing, police say. He was placed in the Rock Hill city jail, where he remained Friday morning under $2,470 bond.

A hospital spoksperson said the alarm caused little disturbance in the building and was “appropriately contained.”
