Police: Man arrested after going into restricted area at Winthrop’s presidential forum

An 18-year-old man was arrested late Friday at the Democratic presidential candidates forum at Winthrop University after he three times went into a restricted area set aside for candidates, police said.

The man was charged with public disorderly conduct and resisting police. The arrest was shortly after a Georgia woman was arrested over accusations of marijuana possession during a security search to enter the forum.

There was no threat to any of the candidates in the arrest of the man, said Frank Zebedis, Winthrop chief of police.

The incident was near the rear of Byrnes Auditorium. The man was told three times not to go into the secure area, Zebedis said.

After the man was told he was under arrest he tried to flee but was caught, the chief said.
