Report: Traffic stop in Rock Hill leads to arrest of man wanted for drug distribution

A man who officers say was wanted by Winthrop University Campus Police for drug distribution charges was jailed Monday after being pulled over by Rock Hill Police for a broken tail light.

Jontavis Javar Cunningham, 24, of Rock Hill, was charged with driving under suspension, resisting police, giving false information to police and possession with intent to distribute marijuana, according to law enforcement records. He was taken to Rock Hill city jail, where he remained Tuesday under $7,500 bond.

Officers say they were on scene in a parking lot on Ebenezer Road Monday after someone reported a car sitting there for nearly 40 minutes with its lights on, the police incident report states. An officer arriving saw the reported Honda leave the parking lot, and the officer noticed that the vehicle had a broken brake light.

The officer pulled the car over and spoke with the driver, later identified as Cunningham, who said he didn’t have a driver’s license, according to the incident report. He told the officer his name was James Crockett, gave them a birth date and said he didn’t know the last four digits of his Social Security number, police allege.

He’s accused of giving false information to the police officer and when he later gave authorities his real name, officers found his license was suspended and that he was wanted by for possession with intent to distribute marijuana and resisting police, the report states.
