A York man was arrested on drug charges after officers investigated a report of gunshots near Winthrop University late New Year’s Day, according to Rock Hill Police.

Gunshots were reported about 11:50 p.m. at the American Legion on South Cherry Road, and officers saw a large group of people walking north on Cherry Road, according to a police report. A man wearing khaki pants and a white shirt ran across the street away from officers, disregarding commands to stop.

Several officers pursued and apprehended the man, identified as 19-year-old Joshua Darnell Adams, police said. While searching him, they found a plastic bag containing 4.23 grams of marijuana in his back pocket.

Police say they cleared the other individuals as suspects in the shooting.

While officers escorted Adams to a holding cell at the Rock Hill Law Center, a plastic bag containing 1.24 grams of crack cocaine that Adams had concealed fell to the floor, the report states. Officers conducted a strip search on him and found no other contraband.

Adams was charged with possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine in proximity of a school and possession of marijuana, according to law enforcement records. He remained in the York County Detention Center on Monday under $30,000 bond.
