Troopers: Man led police on high-speed chase in car stolen from Rock Hill

A Chester County man is on the run after, authorities say, he took his girlfriend’s car from her Rock Hill home and led law enforcement on a high-speed chase through North Carolina on Tuesday.

York County deputies were called to a home on Shadow Lane in Rock Hill about 3 p.m. Tuesday, according to a sheriff’s report. The homeowner said her child’s father, 24-year-old John David Wurdemann, of Edgemoor, came to her home asking for a ride to North Carolina.

The woman told deputies that when she refused, Wurdemann became angry and took her purse and vehicle. She believed he took her car to North Carolina.

A trooper tried to stop the car on Interstate 85 in Davidson County, North Carolina, for speeding about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to Lt. Jeff Gordon, a spokesman for the N.C. State Highway Patrol. The driver, Wurdemann, refused to stop and led troopers on a chase that exceeded speeds of 100 mph.

Wurdemann exited the interstate on Green Needle Road in Lexington, N.C., Gordon said. He stopped the car on Green Needle Road and fled on foot.

The Highway Patrol’s helicopter was brought in to assist officers from three agencies in searching for Wurdemann, Gordon said. The search was suspended after 2.5 hours.

Gordon said authorities believe Wurdemann had been living in the High Point or Thomasville areas of North Carolina recently. When he is located, Wurdemann will be charged with felony speeding to elude arrest, driving while impaired, careless and reckless driving, speeding 100 mph in a 65 mph zone and failing to heed to blue lights and sirens, Gordon said.

Anyone with information on Wurdemann’s whereabouts is asked to call the Highway Patrol’s communications center in Salisbury, N.C., at 1-800-233-3151.
