Man charged after dog dies, others seized from York County home

Investigators charged a man with several counts of animal abandonment after officers late last month seized several dogs from a Sharon home where another dog was also found dead, according to the York County Sheriff’s Office.

Manuel Abe Burris, 52, was charged with seven counts of abandonment of animals, according to jail records. He was placed in the York County Detention Center and released Friday under $3,500 bond.

Deputies and animal control officers met on Dec. 30 with three neighbors at a home on the 3900 block of Hord Road, according to a sheriff’s report. A dog was fastened to a heavy log chain about 9 feet long connected to a tree in the front yard.

The dog had no shelter from the steady rain that was falling that day and was surrounded by a few inches of mud from days of rain before, deputies said. The animal had no place out of the mud to stand except for some boards provided by animal control officers, and there was also a “strong unpleasant odor” in the area.

Five other dogs were living under “the same conditions” at the house, the report states. Another dog put onto the porch by officers had been running loose when they arrived.

One of the dogs was dead near the front door of the home, deputies say. He had dark stains on his head, neck and chest area. All of the dogs were described as a pit bull or pit bull mix.

Deputies initially could not find the dogs’ owner, but after an investigation Burris was arrested.
