No bond for man charged in Lake Wylie death

The man charged in the death of a beloved greenhouse owner was denied bond Thursday in court. He continues to fight extradition from Charlotte to York County to face a murder charge that could end with life in a South Carolina prison if convicted.

Kevin Dejesus, 21, a Honduran immigrant who lived in Charlotte, allegedly shot Jesse Campbell at Campbell’s home on Lake Wylie on Jan. 6. Police said pieces of a broken taillight led them to Dejesus, a former employee at Campbell’s Greenhouse and Nursery in Charlotte’s Dilworth community.

Dejesus is next scheduled for court Feb. 25 for a probable cause hearing on the extradition. He was in possession of a Honduran passport at the time he was arrested and his immigration status remains unclear, but his immigration status has no impact on him facing murder charges in South Carolina.

The killing shocked people in both Carolinas, as Campbell, a native of Cleveland County, N.C., ran the business for decades after a career as a teacher in Gaston and Mecklenburg counties. A judge Thursday kept Dejesus in the Mecklenburg County jail without bond as the extradition process continues, said Meghan McDonald, a spokesperson for the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office.

Dejesus still has not been served with the murder warrant by York County deputies who traced the pieces of broken taillight to a Toyota Tacoma truck Dejesus was driving when pulled over by Charlotte police after officers in both states were searching for a match. If Dejesus continues to fight extradition, governors of both states will have to sign extradition warrants forcing Dejesus to be moved.

Upon extradition to South Carolina, Dejesus would face a murder charge that carries 30 years to life in prison if convicted.
