A man wanted by the FBI on narcotics charges fled police during a traffic stop Thursday, prompting a chase and a lockdown at four Rock Hill schools, according to law enforcement records.

Officers stopped a speeding Honda Civic on Albright Road near Black Street just before 10 a.m. Thursday, according to a Rock Hill police report released Friday morning. The driver, Stevious Thompson, 38, of Chester, provided his driver’s license, and officers determined he was wanted by the FBI for distribution of narcotics charges.

When asked to step out of the car, Thompson asked officers why and refused to get out, police said. An officer reached for Thompson’s arm, but he put the car in drive and sped off toward Flint Street Extension.

Police pursued the car down Flint Street Extension and onto Porter Road. The car was found unattended on the 1400 block of Margaret Street.

Thompson was later found in woods behind a home on Margaret Street, police said. K-9s were brought in to assist with the search, and four nearby schools – Castle Heights Middle School, Rock Hill High School, Independence Elementary School and the Flexible Learning Center – were placed on a preventive lockdown. School officials said the lockdown did not disrupt learning and was lifted by 11 a.m.

Rock Hill officers charged Thompson with failure to stop for blue lights. He remained in the York County Detention Center Friday on a hold for the FBI.
