A Rock Hill man was arrested this weekend accused of drinking and smoking marijuana in a car with an infant in back seat.

Christon Minton, 31, was arrested after attempting to avoid a traffic checkpoint at Bagwell Circle and Fieldcrest Drive, according to a Rock Hill incident report.

Minton approached the checkpoint at 8:20 p.m. Friday, then turned into a residential driveway and then pulled back out “in a quick manner” attempting to drive away from the checkpoint, the report states. Officers initiated a traffic stop, and could reportedly smell the “odor of burnt marijuana” coming from the car, and could see an open can of beer in the cup holder.

Minton reportedly told the officers he smoked all the marijuana prior to being stopped.

While searching the vehicle, officers noticed Minton’s 1-year-old son was in a child seat in the back of the car. Minton also admitted to having a handgun under the driver’s seat. Minton’s driver’s license was also found to be suspended.

The driver told officers he knew his son was in the car while he was drinking and smoking marijuana. He was charged with unlawful conduct toward a child, unlawful carrying of a pistol, having an open container in a motor vehicle and driving under suspension.

The child and the car were turned over to Minton’s brother.
