A York County Health Department employee was charged with embezzling public funds for stealing money in 2014, according to the State Law Enforcement Division.

Linda Denton Rumfelt, 40, of Turkey Creek Road, was charged with embezzlement of public funds less than $10,000, according to jail records. She was placed in the York County Detention Center, where she remained Wednesday afternoon without bond.

Rumfelt was an administrative team leader at the York County Health Department when she embezzled $267 from the agency, according to an arrest warrant provided by SLED. In her position, Rumfelt was entrusted with safekeeping, transfer and disbursement of the department’s petty cash and cash drawer.

Investigators had probable cause to charge Rumfelt based on information obtained through a police investigation and a statement from Rumfelt, the warrant states.

Rumfelt has not been employed with the health department for more than a year, according to Cassie Harris, a spokesperson for the Department of Health and Environmental Control.

DHEC officials conducted an audit of the York County Health Department in September 2014 and found that “payments had not been deposited and that receipts could not be reconciled,” Harris said. After the audit, DHEC turned the matter over to the York Police Department.
