A brazen would-be thief tried to steal more than $2,000 in clothes from a Belk department store in Rock Hill Friday, using old Belk bags as subterfuge.

The man escaped when store employees tried to collar him, according to police.

Officers were called at about 9 p.m. to the Belk at the Rock Hill Galleria, where the loss prevention officer told them the shoplifter kept taking items to the dressing room. After the last trip, the man walked out of the store with clothes in older Belk bags, where he was confronted by the loss prevention officer.

The thief then dropped the goods and ran across Dave Lyle Boulevard and disappeared. The clothing recovered was valued at $2,192.36.
