Rock Hill students will be dismissed early on Aug. 21 for the first total solar eclipse in the U.S. since 1979.

The school district approved its 2017-18 calendar in March, with classes to begin on Aug. 17.

On Monday, the school board unanimously approved making Aug. 21, 2017, the day of the ecplise, a half day instead of a full day. May 30, 2018, will now be a full day for students.

Elementary students dismiss at 11 a.m. on half days, followed by middle school students at 11:30 a.m. and high school at 11:45 a.m.

On May 11, the Clover school district announced the same change to its calendar, citing safety concerns.
