Local students given National Achievement scholarships

Four local students have been named recipients of 2015 National Achievement Scholarships.

About 800 black students across the country received more than $2 million in awards in the 2015 program.

Around 150,000 students entered the competition for these scholarships by taking the 2013 PSAT/NMSQT tests as juniors. Last fall, 1,600 students were named semifinalists and from those, 700 were given $2,500 scholarships and an additional 100 students were given corporate-sponsored scholarships that varied in amount.

This is the final year of the National Achievement Scholarship Program in its current form. Next year, the program will partner with UNCF, the country’s largest minority education organization.

The following students were given $2,500 scholarships: Onastasia Ebright, Fort Mill, Fort Mill High School; Hannah Harvey, Fort Mill, Nation Ford High School; Gabriella Lott, Lake Wylie, South Carolina Governor’s Schools for the Arts and Humanities; Meghan Pearson, Rock Hill, South Pointe High School.
