Fort Mill school district

One of Fort Mill school district’s newest elementary schools has a new leader.

Savannah Steger has been named principal of River Trail Elementary School, which will open for the 2020-21 school year, a release from the district states. She will start her new role on July 1.

Steger will oversee the opening of the new school, which was delayed due to construction problems, The Herald previously reported.

Steger replaces Peter Olinger, who accepted the role as director of elementary education for the district.

Steger is the assistant principal of Pleasant Knoll Elementary School. She earned her bachelor of science in early education from Winthrop University and a masters in education from the University of South Carolina, the release states.

Steger is certified in Gifted and Talented education along with reading recovery training, according to the district. She has 10 years’ experience teaching.

Steger taught kindergarten at York Preparatory Academy before joining the district to teach third grade at Pleasant Knoll Elementary, the release states. She also was a third grade teacher at Doby’s Bridge Elementary before taking her current role in 2017.

“Mrs. Steger has the experience and energy that is needed to successfully open a new elementary school,” Superintendent Chuck Epps said in a prepared statement. ”Her appointment to this role following Mr. Olinger will ensure an exciting and smooth transition for students to the new River Trail Elementary.”

The school, where students will root for the Otters, will not be open until students return from winter break. River Trail Elementary is on the Fort Mill Southern Bypass south of Catawba Ridge High School.
