SC schools to receive $10 million worth of PPE from state
Schools throughout South Carolina will receive a total of $10 million in personal protective equipment, Gov. Henry McMaster announced Wednesday.
The PPE will be headed to all 70 school districts that applied for it, McMaster said in a news release.
The $10 million will buy hundreds of thousands of masks, including cloth masks and KN95 masks, 46,000 gloves, 237,000 nursing gowns, 12,000 cases of disinfecting wipes, 11,000 gallons of hand sanitizer and more, according to the news release.
“Getting our children back into the classroom is vital for the continued growth of our state,” McMaster said in the release. “Securing this PPE will ensure that each school has the resources needed to succeed in providing a safe environment for both students and faculty.”
The announcement comes as many schools brace for a school year amid the COVID 19 pandemic. Some schools, including some in the S.C. Midlands, have already begun the “LEAP” days, in which students show up for face-to-face classes where teachers assess their progress and prepare them for coronavirus safety precautions heading into the new school year.
In the Midlands, the following school districts will receive PPE:
- Aiken
- Barnwell 19, 29 and 45
- Chester
- Edgefield
- Fairfield
- Kershaw
- Lancaster
- Lexington 2 and 3
- Lexington-Richland 5
- Richland 1 and 2
- Newberry
- Saluda
