A Fort Mill teacher just won $10,000 and is a finalist for SC Teacher of the Year

South Carolina Department of Education

A Fort Mill middle school math teacher is one of five finalists for South Carolina Teacher of the Year.

Laura Merk learned the news Thursday morning when state superintendent of education Molly Spearman made the announcement at Springfield Middle School.

“Her passion for math could have taken her in many directions in life, but she chose to become a teacher to invest in students and help them unlock their limitless potential,” Spearman said in a release Thursday. “Commitment, talent, and genuine care for students and her school community are the reasons she has been selected for this honor.”

Merk received $10,000 and will advance along with four other finalists to an interview stage with a team of judges. The winner of state teacher of the year will be announced May 4 in Columbia. The winner gets $25,000 and a new BMW to use for a year.

“She is an outstanding educator, whose dedication to her students and love for teaching inspires all those around her,” Fort Mill superintendent Chuck Epps said of Merk.
