Fort Mill schools list “children first, every day” as the mission. Evidently schools aren’t a bad place for employees, either.

Forbes recently listed its ranking of best employers by state. Forbes and market research company Statista compiled the fourth annual list. More than 70,000 employees nationwide, working at businesses of 500 or more employees, were surveyed. The list shows the top 50 employers from those anonymous surveys for each state.

The Fort Mill School District and its roughly 2,500 employees came in at No. 8 in South Carolina. The district is the only listed employer whose headquarters is located in York, Lancaster or Chester counties. Many listed companies have offices or facilities in the tri-county area.

Fort Mill was the top listed K-12 public school district. The district in Horry County came in at No. 47. Higher education employers on the list are the University of South Carolina, Coastal Carolina University and Clemson University.

The North Carolina rankings include a host of educational employers, mostly universities. The North Carolina rankings to do include — as the South Carolina ones do — employers with a large base in Charlotte that could draw from York County residents. Novant Health, Duke Energy and Atrium Health are on the North Carolina list. Charlotte-based Honeywell International is the top ranked company on the South Carolina list.

“It is a priority of the school board and our district administration to maintain a positive and supportive work environment for all employees,” Fort Mill superintendent Chuck Epps said in a release from the district. “We believe that maintaining the family atmosphere among our staff is key to successfully serving our students and community.”

The Fort Mill district has grown to 20 schools, including three high schools.
