Winthrop University held its spot among the top ten public schools in the South based on the latest U.S. News and World Report rankings.

The Rock Hill, S.C., university maintained its rank for a third straight year as No. 6 in top public universities in the South, according to the 2023 Best Colleges rankings released Monday.

Winthrop, which has around 4,000 undergraduate students, tied with Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tenn., for No. 18 out of 136 regional public and private universities in the South.

Schools are ranked by graduation and retention rates, social mobility, class size, student to faculty ratio, opinions from college presidents and deans, financial resources per student, test scores, student excellence and alumni giving, according to the report’s methodology page.

In specific areas, Winthrop tied for No. 7 in best undergraduate teaching at regional universities, a jump from the No. 15 ranking it received last year. The university also ranked No. 6 in best colleges for veterans, and tied for No. 19 in top performers on social mobility, which measures a schools’ rate of enrolling and graduating students who received federal Pell Grants.

The university also rose three spots to No. 40 in best value schools, which takes into account a school’s academic quality and the 2021-2022 net cost of attendance for an out-of-state student who received the average level of need-based financial aid. Winthrop’s in-state tuition is $15,866 and out-of-state tuition is $30,196, according to the report.

“We frequently hear success stories from our alumni, like me, about how Winthrop made a significant impact on their lives,” President Edward Serna said in a statement. “Whether they are legacy students or first-generation, our alumni learned from top educators to be the best version of themselves.

“While we do not actively chase these rankings, they validate the continued hard work of the Winthrop community and highlight our strengths.”
