‘Models of excellence’: Elementary school in York County tabbed as one of nation’s best
A York County elementary school is one of five South Carolina schools to earn National Blue Ribbon Schools status.
Gold Hill Elementary School joins Brashier Middle College Charter High School, Fairfield Magnet for Math and Science, Mitchell Road Elementary School and St. James Elementary School on the list. One of 11 Fort Mill School District elementary schools, Gold Hill serves parts of Tega Cay and unincorporated Fort Mill.
“We are extremely proud of these five South Carolina schools that have been honored nationally for their academic excellence,” state superintendent of education Molly Spearman said in a release Friday. “This award is testament to the hard work of students, teachers, staff and families in these communities. These five schools are models of excellence for our entire state and nation.”
The recognition is based on overall academic performance. Up to 420 schools nationwide can be nominated each year. This year there were 297 schools honored from 45 states. All five honorees from South Carolina were recognized as “exemplary high-performing schools” meaning they’re among the state’s highest in student assessment scores.
Fort Mill students largely outperformed counterparts across the state in recently released SC READY and SCPASS scores that measure math, language arts and science progress in elementary and middle schools. Fort Mill students led the state in multiple scores broken out by grade level and subject.
Gold Hill joins Fort Mill High School (2018) and Nation Ford High School (2020) as district schools to have earned the honor. York Preparatory Academy in Rock Hill also received the honor in 2018.
