College graduation is a rite of passage. This is what happened at Winthrop on Saturday

They all had one thing in common: a solid black gown.

But their stoles and caps were so diverse, loved ones could pick their graduate out of the crowd with ease.

Some stoles had Greek letters, some had names of majors and others said “first generation.”

The graduates were members of the Winthrop University Spring class of 2023, where nearly 570 seniors walked across the stage at the Coliseum to accept their diplomas.

Saturday’s ceremonies were divided into two parts. Graduates from the College of Visual and Performing Arts and the College of Arts and Sciences received diplomas at 10 a.m. at the coliseum.

At 3 p.m., graduates in the College of Business Administration and the Richard W. Riley College of Education received diplomas.

The university held its graduate commencement ceremony Thursday, where 260 people received master’s or specialist degrees.

The Herald was there to capture memories from the day. Take a moment to look at them.
