Fort Mill and Clover schools sit at the head of the class when it comes to student test performance, again.

New South Carolina Department of Education data for elementary, middle and high school testing show students in both districts test well higher than state averages in math, reading and other subjects. Lancaster County routinely scores among the top 20 of about 80 school districts.

Fort Mill finished well clear of any other district across most grade and subject level tests. The same happened last year. The district compares scores across the state each year, said superintendent Chuck Epps.

“The results consistently show that our students, teachers and staff are working hard to maintain our tradition of excellence.”

The Herald combed scores from across the state to see how districts in the Rock Hill region stack up not only here, but against all of the more than 80 traditional and charter school districts. The following visual shows how far ahead Fort Mill and Clover are, and where districts like Rock Hill, York and Clover hit their high marks.

Here’s a snapshot for each of the six local districts:

Fort Mill

There isn’t another district close to Fort Mill’s test results. SC READY tests third through eighth grade in math and English language arts. End of course testing includes four high school level classes — Algebra 1, Biology 1, English 2 and U.S. History. Combined, that’s 16 test results to compare statewide.

Fort Mill finished with the highest marks in 14 of them. Fort Mill was third in Algebra 1 and fourth in fourth-grade math.

Clover

Across the 16 grade and subject levels, Clover schools averaged a 4.4 ranking. No other district except for neighboring Fort Mill did better. Clover even bested Fort Mill fourth grade math. Clover was outside the top five in state rankings only three times, and never finished below No. 8. It’s the only district except for Fort Mill to finish top 10 in every ranking.

Lancaster County

Lancaster County finished top 10 in the state in fourth-grade math (No. 8), sixth-grade math (No. 7) and sixth-grade English (No. 6). The district averaged a No. 18 ranking, but scores from seventh and higher grades weren’t that strong.

Rock Hill

Rock Hill’s best subjects in the recent scores were No. 12 in Biology 1 and No. 16 in fifth-grade English. The district averaged a No. 32 ranking. Results held fairly steady from the lower through the higher grades.

York

York finished just past the mid-point for districts statewide, with an average ranking of No. 45. Higher marks came in fourth-grade math, fifth-grade math and English, sixth-grade math, seventh-grade math and U.S. History. Those subjects ranked No. 33 through 38.

Chester County

Chester County averaged a No. 50 ranking. All its high school courses were that ranking or better. Scores were fairly level, ranking from a No. 38 to No. 60 across the 16 subject and grade level combinations.
