The superintendent of Rock Hill School District will retire at the end of this week.

Superintendent Tommy Schmolze announced his departure at Tuesday night’s board of education meeting after three years as the district’s leader.

“Although I would have loved to complete the year with all of you, I’m looking forward to using my talents and skills as I pursue other opportunities outside of education,” Schmolze said.

The district hired Schmolze in 2021 after the previous superintendent unexpectedly resigned one week into that school year. Schmolze was the assistant superintendent of the Fort Mill School District at the time.

The board accepted his resignation in a 6-1 vote, with only Vice Chair Jennifer Hutchinson opposed.

Hutchinson thanked Schmolze for his kindness and “steady hand” in leadership.

“I am not happy, I just want to say, in how things have transpired, but I am encouraged that you will be a supporter of us,” Hutchinson said. “I wish that you could have stayed longer.”

Deputy Superintendent John Jones will serve as the interim superintendent while the district searches for a replacement.
