The Lancaster County School District will look for a new leader after Superintendent Raashad Fitzpatrick announced Wednesday he is resigning.

Fitzpatrick, the first Black superintendent of Lancaster schools since integration, had led the district the past two years. He is leaving at the end of 2025 to become Cherokee County schools superintendent.

The district will hire a search firm to select its next superintendent, school board members said Wednesday after a meeting.

At a news conference Wednesday, Fitzpatrick said he wanted to be closer to family in Spartanburg.

The school district has seen massive growth in northern Lancaster County in recent years as the population in Indian Land has boomed. The northern part of the county borders Charlotte to the north and Fort Mill and Rock Hill to the west. Thousands of people have settled in the northern half of the county while commuting to York County and Charlotte for work.

The district serves over 15,000 students.
