Clover High students named region winners in Verizon app contest
Five Clover High School students who won a state Verizon contest in which they created an app for accident victims have moved on to the third and final level.
The students competed against 11 teams to be named a Best in Region team in the Verizon Innovative App Challenge. They move on to the contest for eight Best in Nation titles.
The students are Brandon Eish, Tyler DeFalco, Carson Stabell, Dale Trimper and Grant Williams. They worked together to create the concept, which they outlined in a three-minute video for their “Crash Helper” app.
The team created an app “for people who do not know what to do in the event of an accident.”
“They are already so creative, and this is a chance to let those creative juices flow,” said Amy Moss, an AP computer science teacher who advised the team.
Moss said one requirement of the contest is that students must create an app to benefit the community.
To be named a Best in Region team, the students had to submit a new 30-second video promoting their app and its functions.
The students’ app covers accident details like getting insurance information, collecting names and addresses, taking and storing pictures and more, she said.
To compete in the Best in Nation contest, Moss said, the students will explain their app concept online Wednesday and answer questions for a panel of judges.
One high school and one middle school from each of the four regions will be named Best in Nation winners on Tuesday, Feb. 2.
The winners will receive a $15,000 grant for their school’s career and technology programs and an invitation to Nashville, Tenn. this summer. In addition, a team of programmers from Verizon will come to the school to help make the app come to life.
Supporters of the Clover students can vote for them to win a Fan Favorite award by texting “TEAMCAR1” to 22333. The Fan Favorite team earns $15,000 and the chance to work with experts to make their app a reality.
