Harrisburg Elementary School in Indian Land dismissed about 1,000 students at 11 a.m. Tuesday due to a power outage, school officials said.

Principal Steven Puckett said a new transformer was installed at the school on Monday and that it appeared to be functioning well at the time the work was done.

However, he said the transformer began to malfunction Sunday night or early Monday.

Puckett said the school has backup power for classroom areas, but not for the cafeteria, so leaders decided to close the school before lunch.

Puckett said a new transformer would be installed and he expected the school to have power by mid-afternoon on Tuesday.

The school opened in fall 2014.
