Traveler returning to York County is S.C.’s 18th reported case of Zika

A York County resident who traveled to a country where the Zika virus is active marks the 18th case of the disease reported in South Carolina.

Multiple media organizations reported that the case is the first for the county.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control received confirmation of the case from a lab Friday night. Agency spokesman Jim Beasley says the state isn’t releasing where the person contracted the virus.

All 18 cases reported in South Carolina this year involved travelers to countries where the Zika virus is active. Nineteen cases of Zika have been reported in North Carolina.

No cases have been reported of people contracting the virus from a mosquito in North Carolina or South Carolina.
