Falling tree kills 71-year-old woman walking her dog, Georgia police say
A Snellville, Georgia woman was killed Thursday when a large tree fell into the roadway as she was walking her dog in her neighborhood.
Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Service officials said the 71-year-old victim, identified as Lynn Trapp, was pronounced dead at the scene after she and her pooch became pinned under the heavy debris, according to a news release.
Authorities responded around 11:15 a.m. after a neighbor heard “a loud thud” in her yard as the tree came crashing down and realized there was someone trapped underneath, according to a police report obtained by McClatchy News. Another neighbor told police she saw Trapp walking her dog just before the incident and shouted for her to move out of the way.
That woman “ran to see if Trapp was OK ... then called 911 because she could hear the noises that sounded like a dog in pain,” the police report states.
Crews were able to free the injured dog and took it to a nearby veterinarian for treatment, officials said.
The victim’s husband wasn’t at home at the time of the incident and was contacted by police.

Trapp was the second person killed by downed trees this week as heavy rains from Hurricane Sally soaked much of the Atlanta metro area, WSB-TV reported. A man in southwest Atlanta died Wednesday when a tree fell on a home and injured two others inside, according to the outlet.
Damage to cars and buildings, as well as local flooding were also reported across the area.
