‘Mushroom house’ has Zillow Gone Wild tripping. See inside the Michigan anomaly
A house with a Disney-like feel has folks on a popular real estate page swooning over its unique design in Michigan.
It’s called The Thatch House, and it was built by architect Earl Young, who didn’t use blueprints when designing his homes, the house’s page on VisitCharlevoix.com says. And this particular residence of his has landed on the real estate market in Charlevoix for $4.5 million.
It also deviated from the style that made Young famous.
“Built as his first home in 1918, the house did not encompass Young’s developing unique hobbit-home style, but today, in a dramatic re-imagining, The Thatch House exemplifies the storybook magic of the Earl Young mushroom houses,” the listing on Zillow.com says. “The new ‘mushroom house design’, conceived on a napkin by the new owner, took nearly 2 years to finalize. Specialized timber work, carefully erected with every beam layer, is unique and bold.”
The house has seven bedrooms and seven bathrooms spread out over 6,000-square-feet and yes, the inside is just as magical as the outside, the photos show.
Folks on Zillow Gone Wild also were obsessed with the storybook home and brought their observations… mixed in with some jokes.
“I love this. That’s it. That’s the tweet. *10/10, might nibble on the roof,” one person on Twitter joked.
“100% only Renaissance fair attire would be allowed in that household if I owned it,” another said on Facebook.
“I stayed there!! The little hobbit house on the left was an AirBnb-like rental,” someone mentioned. “I think the larger house was sometimes used for big events like weddings, etc. - cool to get to see the inside!”
“I love everything about this one! If you can’t live in one of the 16th century Cotswold Cottages in England, just build yourself a modern day one!” one person observed.
“I love it. I would definitely enjoy eating second breakfast in the backyard,” another said.
“This house looks pretty Smurfy if you ask me,” someone joked.
“Such an opportunity to wear a Gnome costume every time you check the mail or do yard work!” one person said.
Charlevoix is about 275 miles northwest of Detroit.
