A 38-year-old man is dead a week after he was shot in a Utah motel parking lot over a cigarette, authorities said.

Nickolas Parks was shot at the Wasatch Inn around 10:05 a.m. on Oct. 10 in Salt Lake City, the police department said in a news release.

Parks and 60-year-old Joseph Marquez argued over a cigarette, police said.

Police said Parks and his girlfriend walked away from Marquez and went back to their motel room, but Marquez followed them and pounded on their door, KSL reported.

When the couple came out of the motel room, Marquez shot Parks in the head after a verbal fight, the news outlet reported.

Police found Parks in the motel parking lot with a gunshot wound, and he was taken to a hospital in critical condition, authorities said.

He later died from his injuries, police said in an Oct. 17 tweet.

Marquez was arrested and booked into jail on charges of attempted murder, obstruction of justice and unlawful transaction of a firearm by a restricted person.

Thomas Leroy Glasker was also arrested on attempted murder and obstruction of justice charges. He’s accused of handing Marquez the gun used in the shooting and helping him leave the scene, police said.

Inmate records show Marquez and Glasker now face charges of murder.
