Sinkhole swallows car driving down road during furious rainstorm, Georgia photos show
A car was swallowed by a sinkhole spanning the width of a road in Georgia, police say.
More than one road in the area was damaged by heavy rains, Athens-Clarke County police said in a Jan. 4 Facebook post.
Athens-Clarke County police shared a photo of a gaping chasm in a road with the front bumper, hood and windscreen of white Honda Civic poking out on the right end of the road.
A second photo shows the vehicle balanced above the hole, with its front and back bumpers resting on the road’s ledge.
More photos show places where the concrete roadway split down the middle and collapsed in on itself.
Another picture shows where the edge of a road has given way to floodwater, exposing a cavernous, muddy hole with an exposed rusty pipe.
Facebook users expressed their concern about the damage in comments on the police department’s post.
“I’d be so traumatized after that to even drive again. Wow….,” one user wrote.
“That’s got to be a hell of a insurance call,” another commenter said.
“Good lord! That’s terrifying,” a third person commented.
Police said Olympic Drive and Charlie Bolton Road are both closed for repairs and urged drivers to avoid Olympic between Hancock Industrial Boulevard and Athena Drive and Charlie Boltonbetween Lem Edwards Road and Smithonia Road.
Athens is about 70 miles east of Atlanta.
