A dog darted under a driver’s car, then disappeared.

It was anyone’s guess where Georgia firefighters would find it.

“Well when we opened the engine bay ... and see a dog’s face staring at us behind some wires, it was fairly obvious where he was,” City of Marietta firefighter engineer Mark Fisher told McClatchy News in a phone interview.

On March 16, Fisher was among the crew on Truck 52 who helped pull the pooch to safety after it climbed into the sedan’s engine compartment and got stuck. Marietta firefighters Dawson Tucker and Greg Pinizzotto also aided in the rescue.

Firefighters said they got the call before lunchtime, between 10 and 11 a.m. The driver, who wasn’t named, was coming down the road when they spotted the dog and stopped.

When they got out to see if it had gotten out safely, the dog jumped and crawled its way into the engine bay, firefighters said.

Photos shared on the city government’s Facebook page show the dog’s eyes peeking out from the quandary of engine parts.

“We opened up the hood, and the dog was actually stuck between the motor itself and the engine box,” Tucker said. “We took apart the air box, and that was able to get us access to ... pick up the dog from the top of the engine bay.”

In about 10 minutes, the firefighters said they removed the necessary parts, saved the pup and put everything back together before sending the driver on their way.

Both Tucker and Fisher said the unique rescue was a first for them.

“First time for a dog — we’ve done cats in an engine bay before, but no dogs,” Fisher said.

With no ID tags and no one around to claim the dog, Cobb County Animal Services stepped in and took the animal to safety.

Marietta is about 20 miles northwest of downtown Atlanta.
