Remains found in crawl space identified as Virginia man missing since May, cops say
Human remains found in a crawl space near the Virginia-North Carolina border have been identified as a man who disappeared almost two months ago, officials said.
Now, weeks after 30-year-old Austin Lane Mabry was found dead, deputies continue to seek clues in their investigation.
The case dates to May 28, when the Henry County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia said a family member reported Mabry missing. Three days earlier, he was last seen near an apartment in Collinsville, roughly 45 miles south of Roanoke.
Then on June 23, deputies were called to a report about possible human remains at a home in Collinsville.
“Upon arrival, they discovered the remains inside an exterior-covered crawl space entry,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a Facebook post.
After a DNA analysis, deputies on July 14 announced that the remains belonged to Mabry. Still, mystery lingers as officials try to determine how he died.
“The preliminary autopsy results showed no apparent signs of foul play,” the sheriff’s office wrote. “The completed autopsy report is pending additional testing to determine the cause and manner of death.”
