Dazzling mansion once owned by film producer Howard Hughes lists in California. See it

Howard Hughes was a five-tool mogul in his heyday — he had the film world at his feet starting in the late 1930s, he was an aviation pioneer, engineer, philanthropist and business tycoon. He was also a known recluse who would tuck himself into his gigantic mansion and live in the fog of his eccentric ways.

211 South Muirfield Rd was his personal oasis away from the world.

And now, the glimmering home is on the Golden State market for $23 million.

“Nestled on a very private lot with stunning golf course views, this 10,179 square-foot half-ellipse estate exudes the timeless charm of past eras while seamlessly incorporating modern luxuries for an elevated contemporary lifestyle,” the listing on Smith & Berg Partners describes.

The eight-bedroom, 12-bathroom home was built in 1926 by architect Roland E. Coate for socialite Eva K. Fudger but later became the “private sanctuary” of Hughes, who started renting it out from Fudger in the early days before eventually buying it outright for $135,000, Architectural Digest says.

As young Hughes’ success in the Hollywood movie scene started gaining major traction, his popularity soared and soon Tinsel Town’s most elite were flooding to his lavish home, which was modeled after haciendas built during California’s Mexican and Spanish periods, AD noted.

These days, the home is owned by movie producer and restaurateur Ash Shah and his wife, Niroupa Shah, who restored the the residence while managing to keep its historic value, a release said.

Now, the 10,179-square-foot estate is awaiting a new owner who has a taste for living among the rich and the famous in Los Angeles.

Features of the home, according to the listing, include:

  • Gated driveway

  • Three-car garage

  • Workshop

  • Chef’s kitchen

  • Outdoor fireplace

  • Screening room

  • Wine vault

  • Swimming pool

  • Attached guest house

The listing is held by F. Ron Smith and David Berg of Smith & Berg Partners at Compass.
