Remains found at landfill confirmed as missing toddler, GA cops say. Dad now charged
A father will be charged in his son’s murder after remains found at an Atlanta-area landfill were confirmed as the missing toddler, police in Georgia say.
Artavious North, 23, also faces charges of child cruelty and concealing the death of another, according to the East Point Police Department.
The charges come two weeks after North told police his son, J’Asiah Mitchell, 2, was kidnapped Aug. 16 during an armed robbery in nearby DeKalb County.
Investigators determined there was no robbery, however, and charged North with filing a false report, McClatchy News reported. He was later named a person of interest in the 2-year-old’s disappearance.
On Aug. 23, East Point police discovered a child’s remains that had been “out in the elements for several days” at a garbage facility, WAGA reported, citing police.
Authorities were notified Aug. 31 that the body they found was J’Asiah’s, police said.
Authorities didn’t release additional information.
North remained in custody at the DeKalb County Jail as of Sept. 1, online records show.
East Point is about 10 miles southwest of downtown Atlanta.
