60-year-old dies in crash while street racing against 26-year-old, Illinois cops say
A 60-year-old man crashed into an SUV and died while street racing in Illinois, according to authorities.
At about 3:45 p.m. on Sept. 10, deputies with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded to a fatal crash near an intersection in the town of Beach Park, the office said in a news release.
Investigators say a 60-year-old man in a Mustang was drag racing against a 26-year-old behind the wheel of a Mazda 3, according to the release.
While moving at a “high rate of speed,” the 60-year-old slammed into the side of an SUV as it was turning onto the street, the sheriff’s office said.
The SUV driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries, but the 60-year-old was critically injured and died at a hospital, the release said.
Though the 26-year-old driver was not involved in the collision, he is still “being considered a part of the crash, as the drag racing likely contributed to the crash,” the sheriff’s office said.
Officials have not said if charges will be brought but an investigation is underway, according to the sheriff’s office.
Beach Park is roughly 45 miles north of Chicago.
