Two die after speeding car crashes through dead end into canal, California cops say

A speeding car crashed off a dead-end street into a canal, killing two people inside, California police reported.

An onlooker called 911 at 7 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, to report a car had crashed into a waterway at the end of a dead-end street, San Rafael police said in a news release.

Officers found skid marks in the gravel at the end of the street leading to the canal. An onlooker at the scene said they saw the vehicle speeding at 70 mph down the street then heard a splash, police said.

Police found a car sunk in the canal, the release said. Divers found two people trapped inside the car and brought them to the surface, but they could not be revived.

The victim’s names will be released by the county coroner, police said.

Police said alcohol may have been a factor in the crash. An investigation into the crash continues.
