Hit-and-run driver flees fatal crash with motorcycle stuck to front, Georgia cops say
One person was killed and multiple others were hurt when a pickup truck plowed into a group of motorcyclists and sped off with a bike still stuck to its front, Georgia troopers say.
The hit and run happened around 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, along Georgia State Route 61 in Fairmount, Georgia State Patrol said in a preliminary report.
The driver of a Ford F-150 was headed north at “a high rate of speed” when he barrelled into the bikers from behind, according to troopers. The impact caused one of the bikes to become embedded in the front of the truck, the report said.
Instead of stopping, the driver took off and a bystander followed him until officers were able to intervene, the report said. Officers stopped the truck about six miles up the road.
Investigators said the initial crash site was “approximately 1,000 feet long” and it shut down the road for more than two hours.
Three of the bikers were airlifted to area hospitals and two others were taken by ambulance, troopers said. One of them did not survive.
The Ford truck driver, who wasn’t named, faces multiple charges including DUI, first-degree vehicular homicide, hit and run and reckless driving, the report says.
The conditions of the injured motorcyclists weren’t known as of Tuesday, Sept. 19.
Fairmount is about 60 miles northwest of downtown Atlanta.
