Missing 92-year-old man found in submerged car in Mississippi river, Illinois cops say
The search for 92-year-old William Weber had been going on for nearly two months after he went missing the morning of March 30, Illinois police said.
Then, the United Search Corps called the East Moline Police Department with the news. Weber’s car was found submerged in the Mississippi River near a boat ramp in East Moline, according to a May 28 news release.
The 2012 silver Chevy Malibu — donned with Purple Heart license plates and a Korean War sticker — was pulled from the river, police said. When they looked inside, they found Weber’s body.
Family members last saw Weber at his apartment on March 29 and reported him missing the following day, police said.
Weber’s walker was also missing, but his medication was left behind, police said in an April 5 news release.
Police are working to determine the man’s cause of death ahead of a scheduled autopsy. He had not driven since October 2023 due to a knee injury, family members told KWQC in April.
Weber was “a highly respected community member and a Purple Heart recipient,” the United Search Corps said in a Facebook post.
East Moline is about a 160-mile drive southwest of Chicago.
