Raccoons chase dog over cliff, California rescuers say. See the daring rescue

A dog became trapped on a California cliff after raccoons chased it over the edge, rescuers said.

Firefighters with the San Francisco Fire Department rescued the dog using a rope set up on the edge of the cliff, the department said on X, formerly known as Twitter, Sunday, May 26.

Video shows the dog lying by itself behind a chain-link fence on the edge of the cliff. Rescuers whistle toward the dog to get its attention, and it turns its head to look at them.

What appears to be shipping containers for a plumbing business can be seen in the distance in a facility at the bottom of the cliff. Firefighters set up a rope system to lower a rescuer down to the dog.

The dog whines — with its tail still wagging — as the rescuer fastens a sling harness around its hindquarters. The team and someone who sounds like they could be the dog’s owner call out to the dog to comfort it.

The team then hauls the dog and rescuer up the slope through a hole in the chain-link fence back up to stable ground.

The dog, named Cushy-pup, was not injured and was “reunited with their human companion,” the department said.
