Firefighters in a northern California town came across a little animal that was alone and visibly struggling without its mom.

The San Mateo County firefighters had noticed the “tiny beast” running around near Station 17 with its mother before, “but this time, mom was nowhere in sight,” the department said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“The little animal seemed disoriented & was stumbling around,” the department said.

The firefighters offered the coyote pup chicken and water while they waited for wildlife rehabilitators to arrive.

A photo shows the tiny pup lying near two cans of chicken, one full and one empty. Another photo shows the little creature snuggled into a firefighter’s jacket on their lap.

Rescuers from Peninsula Humane Society arrived and determined the pup was dehydrated and malnourished, officials said.

Photos show firefighters loading the little pup into a carrier with a towel and carrying it to an animal rescue truck.

“We hope for a speedy recovery for this tiny beast,” officials said.
