A woman was arrested when authorities found her 5-day-old baby decomposing in the trunk of a vehicle, Kentucky police say.

Louisville Metropolitan Police officers were dispatched to a home July 6 for a report “of a baby that was placed in a bag and hidden in a closet,” according to a citation. Officers found a bag in the closet that had possible blood on it, but there was not a baby inside, police said.

Daira Mejia Aguilar, 22, told police she gave birth to the baby July 2, the citation states. She said she moved the baby to the trunk of her car prior to officers arriving.

On July 7, detectives found the baby in the trunk of Aguilar’s vehicle, police said.

“The child was wrapped in a blanket inside of a trash bag,” according to the citation. “The child appeared to be a full-term newborn in early stages of decomposition.”

Aguilar was arrested and charged with abuse of a corpse, court records show. She was jailed on a $5,000 bond and is due in court July 16.

Police did not say how the baby died.
