A teenage boy stole his family’s car then died while running away from police, Texas officials and news outlets report.

The chase happened at about 9:50 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, the Pearland Police Department said in a news release. As an officer was chasing the vehicle on a highway, the driver “lost control,” slammed into a concrete barrier, then got out and took off running, police said.

The driver, who police later identified as a 14-year-old, had allegedly stolen his mother’s car earlier that night, KRIV reported.

The car, a Kia, was reported stolen prior to the pursuit, KTRK reported.

After the crash, the officer saw the teen running away on foot, but soon lost sight of him, the department said. But about 5 minutes later, dispatch notified officers that an auto-pedestrian accident just happened nearby — the fleeing teen was fatally hit while trying to cross the highway.

“Pearland Police Department Officers administered CPR at the scene, and the injured male was transported to Ben Taub Hospital by ambulance, where he was pronounced deceased,” police said.

An investigation is underway, and anyone with information is asked to contact the police department at 281-997-4100.
