An Ohio man is accused of beating his girlfriend and then stabbing her to death after she stabbed him in self-defense, police said.

Tyler Stiers, 23, is charged with the murder of Kylene A. Young, according to a Facebook post by the Columbus Division of Police.

Attorney information for Stiers was not available.

Around 1 p.m. Dec. 16, police were called to a home to perform a welfare check. Fire crews forced their way into the home and found Young dead inside, officials said.

Young had “multiple stab wounds,” according to a criminal complaint. Her vehicle was also missing from the residence.

Officials said Stiers was the last person known to have been with Young.

Stiers was later found in Athens County driving Young’s vehicle, officials said. He was taken into custody to be questioned.

Stiers told investigators that he hit Young with a “closed fist and she stabbed him in the arm in self-defense,” according to the complaint. He said he hit “her several more times and took the knife from her” and stabbed her repeatedly, killing her, officials said.

A bloody hand print matching Stiers was also found at the scene, according to officials.
