Zoo worker saves owl hit by car, then finds another owl in a car grille in Minnesota
A Minnesota zoo employee was at the right place at the right time twice in one day, and it led to her saving two owls.
“I’m not entirely sure how this happens … but it did,” Annabell Whelan wrote on Facebook.
Whelan is a guest experience manager at Lake Superior Zoo in Duluth, according to her Facebook page.
“Yesterday, one of our amazing team members showed us the true meaning of her dedication to our mission and compassion for animals. In one extraordinary day, Annabell stepped up to rescue not just one BUT two owls in need of help,” a post on the zoo’s Facebook page said.
On Dec. 23, Whelan posted about an injured owl she helped rescue.
“Why wouldn’t I spend my Monday saving an owl that was hit by a car?” she wrote on Facebook.
Later that same day, she found another injured owl.
“Saw this one stuck in the (grille) of someone’s car at (Bentleyville) as we were leaving,” her Facebook post said. “He will be having a sleepover and then going to wildwoods tomorrow right away when they open.”
Wildwoods is a nonprofit wildlife rehabilitation center, according to its website.
Whelan took both owls, and they were later sent to Wildwoods.
“Thanks to her quick actions, the birds are safe and on their way to recovery,” the zoo said.
