A 17-year-old boy shot his little sisters by mistake when he’s accused of opening fire on an unfamiliar car at 5 a.m. on New Year’s Day, according investigators in Tennessee.

It wasn’t until the girls, ages 12 and 13, showed up at a hospital that the teen discovered his mistake, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said in a Jan. 1 news release.

The wounds were not life-threatening and the girls are expected to recover, police said.

“The first police call originated from Southern Hills Medical Center after the two victims arrived there by private vehicle,” police said.

“The 17-year-old arrived at the hospital after learning that his sisters were wounded.”

It was during an investigation that detectives learned the girls’ brother was involved, police said.

“He admitted to shooting at the car, saying that he thought it had been involved in local vehicle burglaries,” police said. “He said he did not know his sisters were in the car.”

The shooting happened Wednesday at Antioch Park, just north of Interstate 24, and there were seven people in the vehicle at the time, police said.

Investigators did not identify the driver of the car and have not released details on why the girls were at the park at 5 a.m.

Their brother is being charged in juvenile court “with multiple counts of attempted criminal homicide,” police said.
