A 1-year-old girl has died weeks after a car crashed through the fence of a Montessori preschool in Texas, killing a teacher and sending five children to the hospital, family members and deputies said.

During pickup after a holiday performance on Dec. 19, a parent, who is believed to have had a medical episode, crashed into a fence near where children were playing, Bexar County deputies said in a news conference.

MKaya Amrani, 1, was taken to the hospital in critical condition and was put on life support, her family told KENS. Her parents told WOAI that she died on Jan. 2.

“We had the darkest days of our life,” her dad, Pibo Amrani, told KENS.

“Mkaya brought light and joy to our school, and her absence leaves a void that cannot be filled,” Excelled Montessori said in a statement to McClatchy News on Jan. 3.

A San Antonio teacher, 22-year-old Alexia Rosales, died at the scene of the crash when she was pinned under a car, according to deputies and Excelled Montessori.

“Alexia wasn’t just a teacher—she was a bright light in all our lives. Her smile, laughter, and boundless love for the children and everyone around her made our school feel like a second home,” the school said in a Facebook post confirming her death.

A parent loaded her children into her vehicle and started to drive, accelerated for an unknown reason and crashed into another car, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said during a Dec. 19 news conference.

The two vehicles went through the school’s fence where Rosales was supervising children, one of them being MKaya, according to deputies and KSAT.

Her parents said they want to ensure that safety changes occur so that a deadly accident never happens again, they told WOAI.

“So many lives have been deeply affected by this horrific accident, and our hearts ache for everyone impacted,” the school said.

No criminal charges against the driver have been filed, deputies told KENS.
