Mysterious fire burns missing man’s home and his vintage Thunderbird, Florida cops say
The “deepening mystery” surrounding a missing person’s case in Florida got a lot stranger after the man’s home and cars went up in flames for unknown reasons, according to investigators.
John Henry Mallouk’s home near Indiantown was destroyed in the Jan. 10 fire, “raising new questions” about his fate, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office said in a Jan. 13 news release. Indiantown is about a 105-mile drive northwest from Miami.
Among the multiple cars destroyed was a classic 1955 red convertible Thunderbird, photos show. All were parked in a carport when they burned.
“The cause of the blaze is currently under investigation, with detectives searching for any connections to Mallouk’s disappearance,” the sheriff’s office said.
“Mallouk, 78, was reported missing in January 2023 by a concerned relative. It was reported that he had not been seen or heard from since August of 2022.”
Detectives searched the home in 2023 and found no hint of foul play. The doors were unlocked, food was in the refrigerator, and a cell phone was on the counter, the sheriff’s office said.
It was as if Mallouk had walked to get something and never came back.
“In light of the recent fire, detectives revisited the site to search for any additional clues that could shed light on Mallouk’s disappearance and to explore whether there might be a correlation between the fire and his case,” the sheriff’s office said.
“Detectives are urging anyone with information about the fire or the whereabouts of John Henry Mallouk to contact the Martin County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division.”
The secluded home was in the 12000 block of Conners Highway, along a canal that encircles Lake Okeechobee, maps show. Much of the surrounding land is agricultural.
