A 26-year-old man died while trying to drive away from a trooper who shot him during a traffic stop in Georgia, officials said.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Cameron David James was pulled over and removed from his Nissan Altima during a Jan. 18 traffic stop.

He resisted arrest and a Georgia State Patrol trooper tried to use his taser on him, but it didn’t work, the GBI said in a Jan. 19 news release.

Then, James reached into his car for what officials said was a gun, causing the trooper to shoot him.

After being shot, James got back in his car and drove away but crashed on the side of Interstate 85 in Coweta County, officials said.

Troopers tried to help him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release. No troopers were injured.

McClatchy News reached out to the Georgia Department of Public Safety on Jan. 20 but they had no comment.

The incident is being investigated at the request of the GSP, officials said.

Coweta County is about a 40-mile drive southwest from downtown Atlanta.
