Man killed in apartment explosion may have been making a bomb, Pennsylvania cops say
Police are investigating after something exploded inside a Pennsylvania man’s apartment, killing him.
Officers responded to the address on Easton’s south side at about 9:40 p.m., Feb. 3, and found a 26-year-old man outside with severe injuries, the Easton Police Department in a Feb. 4 news release. Despite his wounds, police said he was able to exit his apartment and go onto the sidewalk near his unit before first responders arrived.
“It was determined that some sort of explosion occurred in the male’s apartment, which led to the injuries he suffered,” police said in the release.
He was taken to a hospital where he later died.
Investigators believe the man may have been working with explosive material, possibly making a bomb, LehighValleyLive.com reported.
Next-door neighbor Kenia Vasquez said she felt and heard the explosion, but didn’t immediately understand what it was, WFMZ reported.
“The walls shook. I was literally sitting against the wall and the walls shook. My daughter said the floor in the bathroom moved. 10 minutes later is when I saw the sirens and I saw the fire truck and all that,” she told the outlet.
“It worries me about what the intentions were,” she said of her neighbor. “I’m glad that it didn’t go beyond those four walls.”
Police said there’s no danger to the public, and they aren’t searching for anyone else in relation to the incident.
The investigation “is ongoing” in cooperation between police, the Easton Fire Department and Northampton County Coroner’s Office, police said.
Easton is a roughly 70-mile drive north from Philadelphia.
