A Tennessee mother was found guilty of murder in the death of her 1-year-old daughter, officials said.

Megan Boswell was convicted by a jury Thursday, Feb. 13, in the death of Evelyn Boswell, who was reported missing in 2020, WVLT reported.

“Five years ago, we began working alongside the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI, and the Office of the 2nd Judicial District Attorney General to pursue justice for Baby Evelyn. Today, justice was finally served,” Tennessee Bureau of Investigations Director David Rausch said in a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The case garnered national attention in February 2020 after the TBI shared a nationwide AMBER Alert about the girl who was reported missing about two months after she was last seen.

Boswell was found guilty on 19 charges, including one count of first-degree murder, two counts of felony murder, child abuse, child neglect, abuse of a corpse and 11 counts of false reporting, according to WCYB.

McClatchy News reached out to Boswell’s attorney for comment Feb. 13 but did not receive an immediate response.

What happened to Evelyn Boswell?

Evelyn Boswell disappeared from Sullivan County in December 2019, but she wasn’t reported missing until February 2020, McClatchy News reported.

That month, Evelyn’s mom was accused of giving “a number of conflicting statements,” to police, according to the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office. She was arrested and charged with false reporting, McClatchy News reported.

Deputies also arrested Evelyn’s 42-year-old grandmother and her boyfriend who were accused of being in a stolen car connected to her disappearance.

In March, detectives found a body that they believed to be Evelyn’s wrapped in a blanket and aluminum foil inside a trash can in what they described as a “playhouse” on a family member’s property, WCYB reported.

A March 6 autopsy of the body confirmed it was Evelyn’s, the TBI said in an update.

DNA testing revealed the fingerprints on the trash can, blanket and foil belonged to Boswell, WVLT reported.

Boswell was sentenced to life in prison for the three murder charges, and further sentencing is scheduled to take place May 22, WVLT reported.
